Course Description: In this course, we will be examining philosophical questions about the nature and purpose of art, focusing on the relationship between beauty, art, and the artificial. Drawing mainly on Roger Scruton's Beauty (2009) and J.F. Martel's Art in the Age of Artifice (2015), we will not only explore how beauty has been understood in the artistic and philosophical tradition, but also discuss how and why modern forms of artifice (among them, these objects and images that comprise the bulk of our visual culture) have transformed the role of art within contemporary society. As such, the course will take a programmatic take on modern and contemporary art, taking Scruton and Martel as its guides.
