Course Title: Poetry and Poetic Imagination
Course Number: 3063LHS
Course Description: In this course we will seek to discover the power of poetry. You will develop a familiarity with many different forms of poetry, and practice ways of talking about and reading these forms. We'll look at a wide range of modern and contemporary work, sourced from across the 20th and 21st centuries and from around the world. Rather than attempting a historical survey of any particular tradition, our reading will be much more wide-ranging. By looking across cultures, languages and epochs, we will develop a series of criteria that can be used to appreciate and enjoy poems from almost anywhere. We will look at different aesthetic trends, from the conservative to the avant-garde, as well as some of the key themes in contemporary poetry, including colonialism, environmentalism and feminism. We will also read poems in translation, and you will have the opportunity to makes translations of your own.
