Course Description:
This is an advanced-level course on Data Science. The course will focus on deep learning and its use in developing applications such as machine translation, text classification, automatic summarization and question answering.
The course will begin with an overview of the PyTorch library, a standard library used for deep learning. Students will then study linear algebra and calculus from numerical perspectives. After a gentle introduction of neural network models using the familiar linear and softmax regression, the concept of multilayer perceptrons and the essential technique of backward propagation will be introduced. Various ways to regularize deep neural networks will be studied, such as putting norm penalties or allowing dropout, and students will learn how to do optimization for training these regularized deep neural networks.
