Course Description: JPL 105 is designed to acquaint students with grammatical structures and vocabulary appropriate for beginning learners and aimed for students to reach the CEFR level A1*. Through a variety of classroom activities, students develop all four linguistic skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) as well as language knowledge such as grammar, vocabulary, and kanji. Students will learn to understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases aimed at the satisfaction of the needs in daily life. The course will also introduce students to some fundamental Japanese socio-cultural concepts that will help them interpret the underlying meaning behind what is said and what is not said in their encounters with Japanese people on and off campus. The course covers Chapters 1 to 6 of the textbook “Genki I.”
