Why is it important to learn about other cultures? How do different societies meet universal human needs in culturally distinctive ways? This course focuses on these issues, and provides an introduction to anthropological tools for understanding the world. The course begins with basic questions such as: What is culture? How can we study culture? How do cultural anthropologists do their research? We explore the ways people live in diverse environments around the world. The course surveys anthropological approaches to social identity, family, gender and religion among others. The course aims to provide students with increased insight into the worldviews and practices of diverse cultural groups, and to provoke questions that will lead to a better understanding of the culture in which we lead our own lives.
