Various philosophies, religions and thoughts were born in Asia and many of them have influenced peoples in the world until now. Among those thoughts, Buddhism has been most influential to the peoples in most regions in Asia except West Asia. Buddhism was founded by Śākya-muni Buddha and his teachings have been handed down in the holy scriptures called the sūtra. Among lots of sutras the Prajñāpāramitā-sūtra (般若心経)or the Heart Sūtra has been the most popular and prevalent among Mahāyāna Buddhists. The Prajñāpāramitā-sūtra teaches us the essence of emptiness (空)in a compact edition. This course provides students with basic interpretation of the idea of emptiness mainly based on the Prajñāpāramitā-sūtra along with a brief history of Buddhist thoughts in some Asian countries. Students have to discuss about the topic of each class depending on the keynote speech presented by student/s appointed previously.
