Course Title:
Politics and Society in Southeast Asia
Course Number:
PLS367
Course Description:
This course provides a contemporary introduction to Southeast Asia that emphasizes the social and media forces that shape our impressions and experience of place. The concept of a region called “Southeast Asia” emerged as a strategic theater during the second World War, yet its remarkable imagery (from the formation of maps to the institutionalization of cinema) belies such simple classifications. Processes such as colonization, war and the emergence of nationhood speak to the dynamic peaks and crises of becoming modern. We will zoom in on visual dynamics, social movements, state violence, and creative cultures of the region.
Our class plan is also coordinated with several films graciously provided by the filmmakers across the region. We will do our best to incorporate direct interaction with these filmmakers.
