This course explores literary, cultural, and humanitarian responses to natural and nuclear disasters in Japan, focusing on the 2011 earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear accident. It also examines past reactions to the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki through Japanese literature, manga, film, anime, and disaster studies. Additionally, Ruth Ozeki’s A Tale for the Time Being provides a Japanese Canadian perspective on contemporary Japan, woven throughout the course.
