Course Description:
This course offers an exploration of contemporary Japanese traditional arts and culture in Japan. The class will first examine how these traditional arts such as Ikebana, Japanese dance, Zen arts and meditation are practiced and perceived by exploring their philosophy, aesthetics, training style in relation to their notion of body/mind, organization structure; Iemoto system. Further, students will explore how symbols and rituals in these art forms has been interpretated among ethnic minorities and interrelated to mental healing process, class or status, gender distinction, cultural nationalism or globalization phenomenon. This course aims students to explore how culture and arts, rituals and symbols can be understood or manipulated in multiple ways and convey in-depth meanings. Through practicing Ikebana jitsugi, students will also discuss the possibility for the Japanese traditional arts in the future.
