Course Description:
This course will introduce students to the historical, theoretical, and legal foundations of criminal law and procedure. Along the way we will consider what rights and duties citizens have with respect to each other; which kinds of behavior the law enforces vs. which kinds it leaves up to private citizens to figure out for themselves; and the kinds of restrictions a just legal system must enforce against itself in order to ensure the rights of citizens. In addition to the knowledge component of the course, students will get significant experience analyzing issues and developing reasoned arguments to support their conclusions.
