Course Description:
The course focused on lectures and discussions surrounding cultural anthropology. Discusses definitions and concepts of topics such as religion, politics, race, taboos, and gender. Significant focus on the idea of cultural relativism vs universalism. Socratic seminars with classmates on issues such as "social life as a dramatization", taboos, classification, and rituals (funerals, childbirth, weddings, coming of age, etc). Focused on comparing and contrasting various cultures with a focus on indigenous cultures and Eastern vs. Western cultures (such as the historical/cultural/societal significance of teeth in American vs. Japanese culture)
8 different nationalities were represented in the class, including both the professor and students which sometimes improved the discussion.
