Course Title: Social Movements, Human Rights, and Democracy

Course Description: In the fall of 2018, France was shaken by the first protests of the Gilets jaunes (yellow vests) movement, voicing the discontent of hundreds of thousands who feel left out at the margins of society, but now claim their rights as citizens and demand political change. In this course, we aim to understand and frame such popular resistance as we focus on the important role that social movements play and have played in the development of human rights and democracy, by studying historical events, theoretical approaches and contemporary cases (from the Global South and the Global North) that have shaped our current discourses and practices. Students will first be introduced to the fundamentals of social movement studies, to answer questions such as, ‘What are social movements?' and ‘How are collective identity and action constructed?' We then move on to study an obscured history which, other than most conventional Eurocentric approaches,
