Course Description:
Public spheres as the overall context of actors, media, topics and active public can best be understood by comparing them. In doing so, we first examine the peculiarities of national publics with their specific media structures and political discourse cultures. The second part is dedicated to the normative evaluation of media publics with regard to their performance for the functioning of democracy. Thirdly, we look at the delimitation of publics on a European and global scale and the importance of global media events for this delimitation.
