Course Description: The seminar is dedicated to the history of Germany from the dissolution of the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation in 1806. First, the most important steps of the German nation-building in the 19th century (Napoleonic wars, Vormärz, 1848 revolution, founding of the Empire) illuminated. This is followed by the time of the Second Reich, the First World War, the Weimar Republic, the period of National Socialism and the postwar period in both the western and eastern parts of Germany. Not only the political but also the economic, cultural and social aspects are in focus. The participants will be given a comprehensive overview of the last two hundred years of changeful German history based on textual, audio and visual sources, which should lead to a deeper understanding of today's Germany and Europe.
