Course Description: This course sets out to explore and investigate a wide range of developments relating to modern global history. The course begins in the 1500s with the growing interaction among the world’s peoples, and concludes in the early twenty-first century with today’s highly integrated, but also uneven and divided world. In the main, we will consider the contributions of various individuals, societies, cultures, and communities to what is a seemingly endless flow of ‘stories’ and narratives. We will focus on an array of topics and themes such as: social change and revolution; patterns of cultural development and cross-cultural exchange; intellectual thought and systems of knowledge; forms of political organization and the politics of power; aspects of economic relations and technological advances; as well as issues related to war, justice, and peace.
