Globalization, Politics and Social Media
Course Number:
1SK121
Course Description:
Globalization is a major transformation of patterns of interaction and integration among citizens, companies, civil society organizations, media, and states, with multiple of driving forces in political decision-making, trade and investment. Information technology and social media has been another driver of globalization. It is clear we are living in a time of unprecedented technological change. What is less clear is the effect this change has on politics and power. This course will take students through different views on the relationship between the internet and global power. Specifically, we will examine how the Internet impacts global systems (financial, labor, political, social, cultural) and how global actors (both powerful and powerless) use the Internet to either preserve or disrupt these systems. Students are encouraged to develop independent projects with possibilities of field studies.
This course is offered within the framework of Linnaeus University Summer Academy.
