Course Title:
Animation Studies
Course Number:
ART305
Course Description:
Starting from the early 1960s, the Japanese anime industry exported various titles abroad, yet without the label of "Made in Japan" attached to them. This trend changes during the 1990s where anime becomes recognized by the global audience as being produced from Japan. Embedded in the anime texts are also issues related to history, politics and gender.
This course will engage the interdisciplinary field of anime, globalization, and Japanese studies to better understand the broader relationship of nation state, popular culture and globalization. Students will engage with selected anime titles and related articles to better understand how anime has developed into a global medium, and further analyze these texts through readings that deal with Japan's postwar development. Students will develop a better understanding of the history of Japanese anime as well as the global market flows that influenced the current development of anime into a massive international phenomenon.
