Course Description: This is a lecture / seminar course which examines the international politics and security issues of Northeast Asia. The main focus of the course is Japanese security policy, US-Japan Alliance, and the rise of China. The US-Japan Security Treaty has been a central pillar of Japanese security policy since its conclusion in 1952. It has also been a key element in US security strategy in the Asia-Pacific region. This system however is currently facing major challenges due changes in regional balance of power, fiscal strain in both Japan and the US. This course examines the nature, the evolution, and future prospects of this alliance by placing it in multiple contexts – in the context of Japanese security policy, the context of US system of alliances, in the context of changing regional security environment.
