Course Description: This introductory course is designed to introduce students to the basic concepts, theoretical approaches and enduring questions of political science. It helps students understand key concepts, such as power, authority, ideology, the state, legitimacy, democracy, and nationalism, among others, necessary to understand modern politics in historical context. The course is divided into two parts. The first part introduces different approaches to political analysis, major ideological traditions, the role of the state in politics, the nature of legitimacy, contrasting models of democracy, the significance of nationalism and national identity as well as the reshaping of many of these by globalizing forces. The second part highlights the dynamics of the interaction between politics and other spheres of social life, such as the economy, civil society, and popular culture, with a focus on the mechanisms through which societal pressures are channeled into political action.
