Course Description:
This course provides a comprehensive introduction to Korean art and visual
culture. Art works in diverse media, including murals, painting, sculpture,
ceramics, calligraphy, and architecture, will be examined in their cultural
and historical contexts. We will be investigating interrelationships between
art, literature, religious philosophy, and politics. There will be some
consideration of relationships in art between Korea and China and other
cultural traditions.
To learn to analyze and appreciate visual qualities; to learn more about the
history and culture of Korea; to investigate a variety of art historical
methodologies including formal analysis and social art history; to improve
one’s writing, debating, and presentation skills.
