Course Description:
This course introduces students to the law and practice of the EU international relations. The EU external action is crucial to understanding how the EU tackles its internal and external crises and new economic, security and social challenges. The course will be developed along four thematic modules. First, it will present the foundations of EU external relations law with a special focus the EU external relations competences, institutions and treaty-making powers. Secondly, it will deal with current issues of EU diplomacy and the EU's representation in international organisations and multilateral fora. The final part of the course will address the framing and the implementation of EU's proximity policies, including Brexit, and present contrasting visions on the EU's role as an international actor. Students will learn how to critically assess and interpret legal materials of the EU foreign policy and navigate fascinating issues at the crossroads between EU law and diplomacy.
