The objective of this course is an introduction of English Studies in Japan in a historical context. This course will introduce (1) why and how the Japanese have learned English in several historical case studies, and (2) how Japan and the English-speaking world have come to share common values, ideas, and thoughts. (3) While the Japanese forerunners' attitudes to, purposes, and methods of English studies are examined, students will rethink of and have his/her own reasoning and philosophy.
