Course Description: Armed conflicts have always existed around the world. Unfortunately, recent conflicts have shown that this phenomenon is raising increasingly complex legal problems, such as: - the definition of the nature of hostilities when a state or a coalition of states is fighting armed groups located in the territories of third states; - the definition of combatants when so-called ‘terrorists' are involved in the hostilities; - the detention by rebels of State armed forces; - the involvement and status of UN peacekeepers; - the use of autonomous weapons and drones to fight the adversary; - the occupation of a territory in non-international armed conflicts; and - the creation of an effective implementation system in an international context in which the roles of international organization is getting increasingly weak. This course aims at analyzing these complex legal issues by providing an overview of the main norms governing the protection of vulnerable individuals
