Course Description: Twenty years ago, the end of the cold war, the decline of interstate conflicts and the integration of China in the world economy aroused the idea that market democracy and multilateralism will open a new era in international relations, in which Europe will play a major role. The EU expected that his model based on exporting liberal norms will prevail. Today, the disruptive world in which we are has largely shattered that dream. The rise of populism within and outside Europe has dramatically reduced the attractiveness of the liberal model. The emergence of sovereigntist states like Russia, China and India is bringing back Realpolitik at the expense of multilateralism. The election of Donald Trump has severely damaged the transatlantic relation. And China is certainly not converging with the western world.
