Course Title:
INTERNATIONAL CONFLICTS
Course Number:
DAFF 25A46
Course Description:
This seminar will examine some fundamental questions about the nature of war and conflicts in international politics. Even if in Europe we have achieved what some have called a security community or a zone of peace, wars remain a recurrent phenomenon. How has war contributed to the creation of the modern nation-state? Is war an unavoidable consequence of anarchy, and if so what is the role of human agency? Is war a part of human nature or is it a social invention? What factors contribute to conflict among and within nations, how have these factors changed over time? Can we speak of “new wars” in the XXIst century, and if so, why? Is war becoming obsolete? We will try to answer some of these questions with standard political science approaches, as well with an interdisciplinary perspective, incorporating insights from anthropology, psychology and history.
