Course Number: BMET 25A02
Course Description: The objective of this methods workshop is to develop the essential skill sets for students in social sciences to conduct academic research, based on the research and critical assessment of the sociological effects of technology. The workshop focuses on qualitative research methods, mainly academic research, survey design and interviews. The students will go through the different stages of the research process with the instructor, starting with how to design a research question and use the library (both hard copy and electronic resources). The course will continue with the review of academic and non-academic resources (such as newspaper articles), creating a bibliography, avoiding plagiarism, designing surveys and interviews, as well as presenting the research. Within this scope, students will research and discuss a series of social issues, events and conflicts arising from technology, such as the Facebook/Cambridge Analytica affair, fake news during elections, net neutrality, the political power of tech platforms,
