Country: Japan
Course Title: Asian Politics
Course Number: 26228
Course Description: This course provides a broad introduction to the foreign relations of China. The rise of China—its growing economic clout, political influence, and military muscle—is often called the single most momentous process in the international relations of our time. In the context of a post-Cold War order centered on the United States, this ascendance raises the crucial question of “what happens when an established power and a rising power meet.” Thus, this course focuses much attention on the U.S.-China relationship in its various manifestations, from strategic competition to contestation over global governance. Relatedly, we examine how China interacts with other states in the Asia-Pacific, and how the two Koreas, Japan, or ASEAN countries are reacting to their neighbor’s emerging prominence. In exploring each of these topics, we endeavor to understand the perspectives of China’s Communist Party leaders and ordinary people alike, while also assessing theoretical approaches to the study of international relations.
