Course Description:
This course aims to take a fresh look at the notion of art worlds and the socialized nature of artistic and cultural production and consumption à la Becker, in light of theories of and empirical research on cultural globalisation. Drawing on examples from contemporary art movements, the media and music industries from around the world, we look at how art worlds operate across spatial scales; and how trends and social conventions spread across the world; and how they become embedded in different places and social contexts.
