Course Number:

Course Description:
Advertising, materialism, and consumption are central aspects of modern societies across the globe. Contemporary societies are intertwined with consumer culture and marked by peoples continuously growing wants and needs, as well as the conspicuous consumption of mass produced and marketed goods. This course provides a psycho-cultural perspective on consumer culture, and advertising and branded space in particular. We examine the history of advertising, the commercial and social aspects of the messages conveyed by ads, and the advertising industry's influence on social relations and institutions such as politics. Furthermore, we discuss the various ways in marketing to classify consumers, such as the Values and Lifestyle Typology – and learn that individuals differ greatly in their (susceptibility to) consumer values.
