Course Description: Contemporary surveillance is a multi-directional, multifaceted and technologically-mediated phenomenon. Social media, mobile communications, sensor networks are already part of the surveillance activities of many public and private organizations. At the same time, privacy enhancing technologies and regulations as well as peer surveillance give people room for negotiation and action. In this course we will study and critically analyse these practices and associated technologies. This involves reflection on our relation to technologies and their role in our contemporary culture as well as on our understanding of surveillance and privacy and the way they are construed in different genres of media and in academic literature.
