Course Title:
Diversity in Popular Culture and Advertising
Course Number:
CM2077
Course Description:
Diversity comes in many shapes and forms and has become a key notion in societal and scholarly debates. In media studies questions on diversity are usually geared towards gender, race and sexuality, and more recently also towards age and disability. Not only how diversity is present in media products but also effects of (not-so)diverse media content on the audiences in general and society at large are topic of investigation and often form the core of heated debates. For example, while some consider Beyoncé and Lady Gaga as feminist role models and resisting the stereotype of white, heterosexual femininity, others vigorously argue that both Lady Gaga and Beyoncé re-emphasize this stereotype. In this seminar, the production, representation and consumption of diversity are explored.
