Course Title:
Intercultural Communication
Course Number:
CM1010
Course Description:
This course explores the relationship between communication and culture from various theories and perspectives. We see this relationship primarily as a two way process; whereas culture helps shape communication processes on the one hand, communication processes themselves actively engage in the shaping of culture and cultural boundaries on the other. This means we will not understand culture so much as an entity consisting of a fixed a-priori set of assets. Instead we view culture as an open ended process, a social construction that gains meaning in and through discourses and that changes across time and place. We consider relations of power and context as central to this process. The course will present students with various perspectives and theories on intercultural communication and explore various contexts where intercultural communications takes place: business and work, popular media culture, sport, advertising and digital platforms.
