Course Title:
Surveillance in film, TV, and media platforms
Course Number:
CM2068
Course Description:
The course’s primary focus is the representation of surveillance and intelligence on screen (TV, film, and, to some extent, documentary) and in discussion platforms. Surveillance and intelligence, related but distinct concepts, both go back a long way and it is worth exploring the historical dimensions of these concepts. The theoretical literature is mainly concerned with the social, philosophical, and media perspectives on surveillance and intelligence. In the seminar we will see how developments in surveillance techniques give rise to questions about what can be known and at what price. We shall treat SF movies, TV series and documentaries as reflecting contemporary concerns with surveillance. (For instance, but this is just a tentative list: (T)error, Das Leben der Anderen, Homeland, Black Mirror, Minority Report).
