Course Title: Political Economy
Course Number: FEB13068
Course Description: This course is an introduction to political economy. The basic premise of this course is that political actors follow their own self interest. As a consequence the government cannot be considered as a single benevolent actor as is typically assumed in Public Finance. Instead interactions between different political actors determine the outcome of the political process. In particular we will consider the incentives of politicians, voters, media, interest groups and bureaucrats. We will see how they interact and determine the outcome and efficiency of the political process. We will use standard mathematical analysis and game-theoretic modeling to analyze the interactions of political actors. Thus students should be familiar with the basic concepts of optimization and game theory. Exercises will complement the lecture to give students the opportunity to apply the insights and practice the tools encountered in the lecture.
