The main purpose of the course is to introduce the concepts, theoretical perspectives
and empirical results of research into democratisation. The course begins with a
discussion about the basic concepts, definitions and theories that influence research into
democratisation. This discussion covers democracy in the form of political rights and
civic freedoms, democratisation as a phenomenon, processes and phases, and identified
positive and negative factors for democratisation. The second part of the course
examines historical and contemporary trends concerning democratisation in the world.
