Course Description: This course is an introductory class to the Japanese economic history with the focus on the early phase of the Japanese economic development that is the Edo and Meiji periods. Students will learn about the overall development process and some of the critical elements that contributed to prepare for further economic growth in Japan in the mid-20th century. In addition, the course will cover the most recent emerging issues including climate change, aged society, and sustainable development goals (SDGs) that are likely to influence the future direction of the Japanese economy.
