Course Description:
This course provides an introduction to contemporary American Politics. Its goal is for students to become critical observers of this most powerful sate in the world. The course takes a critical geo-historical approach to examine contemporary issues of the United States and to understand this familiar, but at the same time, unfamiliar, country for us living in Japan. It provides a way to understand the complexity and plurality of American politics by focusing on the changing geopolitical fault lines in American political discourse. Because 2020 is a year of the presidential election, throughout the course, we will watch the development closely and work on a class project on the topic. Each class has discussion time to deepen students understanding.
