Course Number:
TF1101
Course Description:
In this course we address a range of topics related to modern and contemporary Japanese society. We consider how constructed ideals of a supposedly "homogenous Japan" intersect with past and current notions of Japanese identity and how they may differ from a more diverse reality. To understand contemporary issues in more depth, the weekly reading and lecture introduces socio-anthropological research findings. These will be combined with broader sociological data and historical studies. One of the main themes running through the course is that of identity. We consider the changes that come about with the formation of the modern Japanese nation-state, the effect on education, the family, rural and urban life, current issues of consumption, religious and political life, and Japan in Asia today. We consider how Japanese national identity is and continuous to be constructed, performed and contested amidst an increasingly diverse society.
