Course Details

Country: Japan
Institution: Soka University
Course Title: Translation Studies
Course Number: TH1401
Course Description: The image many people have of translation is of a person sitting alone front of a computer screen, at a desk on which dictionaries are piled high. Of course translation, or any act of writing, often involves this kind of solitary effort, but that hasn't always been, or needs to be, the case. Translation takes place in society, among people, in life. It concerns the movement of cultural content through and across the bounds of space and time. This course will examine translation in its multiple dimensions, from concrete intimacies of linguistic practice to the expansive reaches of metaphor.
