This study-unit will introduce students to important facts and figures of modern German History and Culture which still have an impact on the cultural memory of the society. It will show that without having a basic knowledge in these key dates and personalities the German culture cannot be understood sufficiently, neither from an intercultural perspective nor from an intrinsic point of view. As being part of the German culture, the specific federal system of German politics will be discussed, too. Relevant examples will enhance students' knowledge of German history and culture. Selected aspects shall be discussed in short presentations by the students. 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - comprehend the most important facts of German history and culture; - reflect on tendencies in German mentality and cultural memory and put them into the right context with contemporary politics.
