The course explores the main issues surrounding the theory and practice of conflict with a special emphasis on the relation between technology and war, with a special focus on nuclear weapons and cyber tools. The course will give an overview of the main theoretical perspectives on the study of international security and politics, focusing both on mainstream and critical approaches and how these developed over time. The evolution of warfare from the classical age to the contemporary world will include the analysis of both international and internal conflicts and the complex interaction between actors and structures. The course will examine in particular nuclear weapons and cybersecurity and the effects of technological innovation on international conflict, addressing the threat landscape and the evolution of governance instruments as well as related technical and ethical issues.
