Course Description: It is often said: “Japanese are born Shinto, marry Christian and die Buddhist” caricaturing a popular practice of attending different shrines and venues for one’s rites of passage in Japan. But what do you think about this statement? This course provides an overview of religious practices in Japan covering both major and minor traditions. It will include topics in Buddhism, Shinto, Confucianism, New Religious Movement, and Christianity. In the first part of the course, students will learn about the historical development of religious traditions in Japan in chronological order. The second half of the course will take thematic and social-scientific approaches to the study of religious expressions in Japan. The significance of the dead and their spirits, ancestors, this-worldly benefit, and other thematically identified characteristics of Japanese traditions are introduced.
