Course Description: This course focuses on the different forms of modern democracy and democratic institutions in the developed world, with attention to which forms work best for certain populations, how the media and civil society interact with democratic government, how the norm of democracy has spread and changed over time, and how historical and social contexts affect democratic functions. The first part of the course focuses on definitions, measures, and theories of democracy. In this section, we will study the historical development of Western democracy, democratic norms and institutions, and theories of democratic political dynamics. The second part of the course will delve into specific topics and problems in advanced industrial democracies today, from the US and the EU to East Asia. While studying theories of democratic politics, civil society and populism, students will be given many opportunities to analyze democracy in practice through discussions of current events, based on selected readings
