Course Description:
This course offers a comprehensive introduction to the ‘domestic politics’ of the EU. We will investigate the reasons behind this unique political experiment, and consider how successful it has been. The major EU institutions will be discussed in detail, and the major policy-making processes of the EU will be explained. We also consider some of the key aspects of the EU’s international relations, with a focus on the role of the EU in the Asia-Pacific. We will study the EU’s relations with key state actors such as Japan, China, and Thailand, and also analyze how the EU has tried to promote several human rights norms in the region, using a variety of norm diffusion methods. We will also look at the EU’s attempts to engage with other governance projects in the region, including ASEAN, the Chinese Belt and Road Initiative, and the Free and Open Indo-Pacific promoted by the US,
