Course Description: Course aim To extend students’ capability in spoken and written communication in English Language, at an advanced level for academic purposes with a focus on the art of academic writing and speaking. Course content This course is for students who wish to expand their confidence in the use of English and in developing their academic expertise in producing spoken and written texts at a level suitable for the completion of undergraduate study. Students will also study how contemporary universal principles of the ‘art of public speaking’, ‘discourse’ and ‘academic writing’ have emerged from earlier traditions and other significant languages. They will compare the discourse styles in English with Asian and European languages and examine the aesthetic, humanistic and ethical qualities of language in the social context.
