Course aim Students will contextualise the historical development of cultural studies theory and practice and develop an understanding of major theoretical perspectives and dominant thinkers in the areas of cultural studies. Course content This course will introduce students to the discipline of Cultural Studies and its tools for critical thinking. Students will examine the construction of individual and collective meaning and identity in everyday life. Students will learn to make sense of contemporary culture in relation to our identities and communities, and develop an understanding of how various cultural texts and practices convey different kinds of meaning and value. Students will develop knowledge of the historical development, major debates and theoretical movements in Cultural Studies. Topics covered include: ideology and power; individual, collective and national identities; race, gender, sexualities and class; post colonialism; media and consumer culture; the impact of globalisation; poststructuralist and postmodernism; digital media cultures; cultural politics and
