Course Description:
In this course we will learn about the history and aesthetics of Korean film in order to understand its transformation to a global cinema. By closely considering individual films, analyzing how they relate to national history, and reading texts in film theory, we will see that Korean film proposes new ways of being and relating to others within a rapidly globalizing society. Issues to be covered include: realism, gender and Korean film, the politics of violence, morality and film genre, and the critique of melodrama.
