Course Description:
The aim of this course is to provide students with an understanding of fundamental theoretical concepts and empirical methods used in development economics. After successfully attending the course, students will be familiar with core concepts from the field of development economics and will be able to address questions from this field empirically. They will have developed an understanding of key theories and will be able to read, critically evaluate, and interpret results and conclusions from empirical articles. This course will provide (i) a through introduction into common concepts of development economics, with a particular focus on quantitative methods to study poverty, inequality and other aspects of economic development, (ii) an introduction into software for statistical analysis (Stata or R), and (iii) hands-on experience in conducting empirical research. Many classes will involve empirical illustrations of the aspects and methods discussed in class, and course participants will be expected to complete homework
