Course Description: This course familiarizes students to the theory and methods of social science research. Topics covered include the meaning of social science and empirical research; key concepts, rules and criteria in empirical research; main research designs and research methods in the social sciences; the role of selecting an appropriate research topic; reviewing and criticizing research; the role of theories and models in empirical research; formulating hypotheses; developing a research design and sampling plan; types of data and data collection techniques; data analysis; and technical writing. Students will be introduced to the entire process of conducting social scientific research and evaluating research conducted by others. Course activities involve library research, practical assignments that lead to the development of research evaluation skills, research skills and the writing of a research proposal, and participation in discussion groups.
