Back in the mid-1990s, the rapid popularization of the Internet had raised the hope of technologically-enhanced citizen engagement in political decision-making. How did the vision of an electronic democracy, where new media enable citizens to monitor and participate in the life of their polis, turn out in practice? On the one hand, our own use of new media is oriented towards consumption and entertainment. On the other, political content circulated online is often dubious or problematic, while political debates online often become heated and even toxic. From cyberwarfare and fake news, to citizen digital activism, online political communication appears to be in a state of constant transformation.
